IIRC the only thing that went wrong was VMWare and I found a fix for that on the Ubuntu forums.
Before I had Dapper I was running Breezy and I did an automatic upgrade from Breezy to Dapper. I am now however running Edgy (AMD64) full release. I installed this version from the alternative CD - I ran a text based install and then ran: apt-get install ubuntu-desktop The reason for this type of install was I accidently ran rm -fr / (long story) which deleted bin, etc, boot etc. Luckily my data was intact in /home although trying to install from the Ubuntu Desktop CD kept prompting me for format my hard drive (/home was on the same partition as /).
