I'm interested in this too. A couple of questions. Will mplayer deal
with real audio streams, which I think is what the BBC use? And can you
tell it to record for a given amount of time?

I used to do something similar. Used realplayer to decode the stream,
Total Recorder to record it, all in a cron job (courtesy of Cygwin) to
record my favourite radio programs while I'm out. Not figured out how to
do this under Linux yet!
