I'm not sure I understood it completely, but there was a sub-directory called 'plugins', with source code for an evolution plugin and one for gaim. The one for evolution does some address lookups in the evolution address book and then invokes evolution to send the message. I guess this could be modified to produce a Thunderbird plugin, but it looks like it's more than justy a config hange to acheive what is being asked for.
