have you checked if you are in the audio group? It looks familiar. I think I've had the same thing, and solved it by adding me in the audio group. system->users and groups ->... I can't recall the correct naming, and can't check at the moment.
Ubuntu studio 11.04 should, by default, add me to the audio group, and indeed I am part of that group.
Since my production could not wait, I reverted back to LTS until I can mess with this some more.
