Given that aplay lists your device, chances are the module is being
loaded.  Confirm this with "lsmod |grep hda-intel".

If the module is loaded, I would next look to the mixer.  Perhaps one of
 the channels is turned down low or is muted (pay attention to the PCM,
master, and headphones).
