It seemed to have resolved the issue until I performed a reboot and logged into a terminal console. Upon logging the opening session showed I still had the 39+ updates available, so proceeded run the update process with the following command:
Sudo apt-get upgrade Being very optimistic, I thought this process was going to verify the previous upgrade process quit very soon after. Sadly this has not been the case and I'm now in the same situation as before. I have captured the following information from the terminal screen which is has running more than 15hours: Unpacking replacement linux-libc-dev ... Preparing to replace wpasupplicant 0.6.9-3ubuntu3 (using .../wpasupplicant_0.6.9-3ubuntu3.1_i386.deb) ... Unpacking replacement wpasupplicant ... Processing triggers for man-db ... Processing triggers for ureadahead ... Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils ... Processing triggers for python-gmenu ... Rebuilding /usr/share/applications/desktop.en_GB.utf8.cache... Processing triggers for python-support ... Setting up mysql-server-5.1 (5.1.63-0ubuntu0.10.04.1) ... And here it remains... I think personally this process is hung and the only alternative option is to use Ctrl-C to terminate this action. Incidentally, when attempting to run the GUI Package Manager during the above state, a message pops-up reporting 'Not all updates can be installed - Run a partial upgrade, to install as many updates as possible'. When you choose to close the window, another pops-up reporting the following: Software index is broken It is impossible to install or remove any software. Please use the package manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install -f" in a terminal to fix this issue at first.
