open-vm-dkms depends on dkms.
dkms 'Recommends' : linux-headers-generic-pae | linux-headers-686-pae |
linux-headers-amd64 | linux-headers-generic | linux-headers
So, if you've disabled Recommends by default, you would not get this.
It is also possible that you had something satisfying one of the above,
but was not sufficient for building. Any thoughts on what might have
caused that?
