  I'm sorry, I'm confused by your comment #2.
  a. The lack of a default idmap range (idmap config * : range = XXXXX - YYYYY) 
is causing the error.
  b. a range was specified for the domain itself
  c. samba generates a default idmap config * : backend = tdb if it's not 
specified
  d. specifying idmap config * : range fixes it.

Did your config have a 'imap config *: range' entry or not?  It seems
like you did in 'a', but then that you *added* one in 'd'.
