Anders, I'm not entirely sure that is the same issue. I've tried an affected openssl s_client on a few of the other noted servers from other comments on the bug, and they are not failing. That said, the original problem with the ucdavis server does not happen anymore for me on Ubuntu 12.04. I think the real problem was PHP not handling the error at all.
