Yes, you can put this just after the remounts: lsof -n | grep DEL sleep 10 Which will give you 10 seconds to view anything that still has deleted files open. I recently found that sshd also may interfere w/ the remounting of root in lucid (not as likely in maverick as it is stopped on runlevel [! 2345]) because it is not properly restarted on libc6 upgrade.
