This is the error reported in the logs:
ERROR: Unable to start MySQL server:
mysqld: [ERROR] Found option without preceding group in config file 
/etc/mysql/my.cnf at line 23!
mysqld: [ERROR] Fatal error in defaults handling. Program aborted!

All config options need to be inside (after) a group definition, that
starts like "[somename]" and then the option.

The mysql config is built pulling together other files via the include
directives. Could you please check your configuration files for such a
scenario as outlined above?
