The new version from the PPA works fine on amd64 but doesn't on i386 with a current 15.10 on VMPlayer 12.0.1. There are no visible errors, vmware-hgfsclient does not show any shared folders, mount gives i/o errors. vmware tools also don't work on i386, so there might be a general problem.
