I can confirm the sad tale of woe with the OpenLdap tutorial on Jaunty. It took me a while to figure out that pasting the syncrepl config text into an ldif file didn't work. When I ran ldapmodify on that ldif, it would skip over parts of the file. As a consequence, things like the olcOverlayConfig didn't get run. I edited it in Kate and was careful not to add any extraneous characters. But I ultimately had to paste each part into a separate ldif file. I'm still not able to get it to work. Worse still, the documentation doesn't provide trouble-shooting of any kind. If you don't get it on your first try, you're on your own. I checked the forums -- not much help. I tried using slapd.conf to setup a master/slave replication. That approach is well-documented. But when I ran slaptest, it said that the master/slave syntax was obsolete and therefore ignored.
I would strongly encourage anyone with an understanding of OpenLap on Ubuntu to help with the tutorial documentation. In particular, the lack of troubleshooting makes Ubuntu a no-go for OpenLdap. I would also strongly encourage people considering OpenLdap on Ubuntu to build it from source. I did get that to work.
