OK, I set the smb.conf back to original and logged off and back on. The network browse gui now takes a long time to appear and clicking on the displayed mshome workgroup also takes a long time to resolve. Trying to click on one of the shown computers in the workgroup produces an error message "Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list from server".
