There's no downside for me. http://www.seabios.org/pipermail/seabios/2015-January/008546.html and http://www.seabios.org/pipermail/seabios/2015-January/008547.html have a couple of answers. Basically, CONFIG_VGA_ALLOCATE_EXTRA_STACK improves things for some old DOS programs. No examples were given.
