I disabled KSM by setting /etc/default/qemu-kvm to have: KSM_ENABLED=0 and did 'sudo restart qemu-kvm'. I also rebooted before seeing the problem. Since then, I downgraded to saucy's qemu-kvm which reset KSM_ENABLED=1. I didn't specifically check /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/run and of course now this is set to '1'.
