I don't remember which was the MySQL Server version when it happened in 8.04 Desktop, I can say it was which Synaptic installed. Now I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 and the version installed is 5.0.67-0ubuntu6.

Anyway, I've changed the grant sentence to: grant select on db1.* to 'dbadmin1'@'localhost' identified by 'a' with grant option; and after that it works fine.
