After talking with Chuck Short, it sounds like changes to libsmbclient in hardy-proposed (3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.3) may fix this.
Please note, the security update for samba is based on 3.0.28a- 1ubuntu4.1 from -updates for Hardy, so people who were only using 3.0 .28a-1ubuntu4 then got the 4.1 changes as well as the 4.2 security fixes.
