Thanks Nicholas I think those links refer mainly to getting as far as which released ubuntu version exhibits the problem, I was intending (and have achieved to some extent, as described in my other post) to build the kernel and bisect it down to find the commit that introduced the problem. I was referring to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel for this.
