Is there a way to test out armhf or arm64 builds on a desktop VM? Or would
the i386 versions work well enough?
NothingMuch, I would recommend the emulator to you as a way to test out ubuntu touch.

I would utilize the x86 version of the emulator, as the armhf is very slow. Device specific bugs won't be found in this way, but you can still find potential application bugs and report them, as well as get a peak at what ubuntu is like on a phone.

Cheers,
