Yes, any Free Software product can be turned into a community effort. But if the problem is a lack of a revenue model, then I think adding a revenue model would be a smart move. So I would rather imagine that the team who's been working on Unity 8 start a business and sell subscriptions. I definitely wouldn't mind paying a small fee each year for the continued support of my phone and desktop.
