Technically, yes. However there are a few words of caution if you have plan to buy a Japanese SIM. Normally, most SIM cards for travellers which can buy at Japan doesn't support voice call/sms. There only support data communication. Some operators sell voice call supported SIM, but it is very high cost (several times of data only SIM) or needs install apps for Android/iOS (no Ubuntu app). Even use the former SIM (i.e. no need apps for voice call), it is necessary to complete the identity verification procedures by uploading personal identification documents to operator's server for enabling voice call service.
