Great! Thanks Oliver. It's working now beautifully - Michale's directions work really well. Have been able to do it all on the tablet, and haven't needed to make anything writable.

the google doc michael linked pretty much re-sembles the same my script
does but in a simpler way, did you try to follow that yet ? you definitely dont need to make anything writable, only the container config file needs to be moved out of the way ...
there might be an issue with creating a container from the terminal
app, since it forbids the execution of the chroot command (which is a
bug i think), but you can work around that by using adb,, ssh or
phablet-shell to run the two commands you need to create a new
container ...
