Yes, you can search and install via the command line tool (try --help).

The normal procedure using the GUI is through the '+' on the Classic Apps page, 
then the magnifying glass to enter a
search term.  I typed 'Firefox' in the search box and got several screensful of 
candidate packages.

Eventually you will be able to do this through a converged Ubuntu Store app, 
but those days are not these days yet.
