Something we did in the Calendar was set the view to be whatever you last used. I'd quite like that in apps, so when I launch them they retain whatever I personally liked, and you could have it retain what you like. That way you avoid having to add clunky settings screens. Just save state when the view is changed, and check the state on launch.
