On the Aquaris E4.5 it's located in the upper left corner, about half a centimeter on the left of the camera. You can see it if you hold the device towards the light so that it reflects on the surface. Not exactly sure how it works, probably either sound or light waves, something that is reflected up to a distance of some 20 centimers. If that is covered (for example when you hold the phone towards your ear), the display will turn off to prevent accidental touches on the display. It is active while a phone call is ongoing and when the display has been woken up by a notification and hasn't been unlocked yet. Br, Michael
