While you can definitely use ubuntu-device-flash (you will want to skip the --wipe option), I'll leave detailed instructions to those who have a lot more experience with bq phones than I.
I just wanted to say that the update is a delta against your current operating system. So while the entire image is 400+MB, the difference between r22 and r23 is only 230MB.
Substantial, as it's replacing half of the existing OS, but a pretty good savings as well. In any case, that's not the cause for concern.
