Hey all. I was reading about the TextSecure async messaging app and related protocol, and learned that they had integrated it into CyanogenMod.
http://www.cyanogenmod.org/blog/whisperpush-secure-messaging-integration https://whispersystems.org/blog/cyanogen-integration/ What it means is, at this system level, any app that sends SMS/MMS to another TextSecure/CyanogenMod user uses their encryption protocols. It doesn't need to know anything about it, just uses the normal android SMS APIs. This is pretty neat, as the protocol and app are open source, and seems to be solid crypto, AFAICS. I wondered if this would be a interesting feature to add to Ubuntu phones?
