I have exactly the same problem. It started between monday and wednesday (I did no image upgrade between working and failing state). I couldn't push the "send"-button in the messaging app, I have zero bars, system settings shows "n.a." as carrier. After a reboot I had no network indicator cellular icon at all (only WiFi). After an image update the icon returned, but still 0 bars.
I have my SIM card in my old dumbphone most of the time now, only tried it out in the Nexus 4 yesterday, but no luck still. I agree that there should be some kind of error message telling me that something is wrong. I might have missed calls and messages for days. But for now I really would like to have it working again. So what can I do to debug this? Thanks a lot!
