Hi there.
I think some of your questions can be answered from the Ubuntu-for-android
project:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_for_Android
http://youtu.be/iv1Z7bf4jXY

Anyway I believe this is now legacy due to Ubuntu-touch, Mir and unity-next
projects that are currently in development, so info will be scarce at the
moment.
As what "docked" means, I suppose it would need to detect a series of
peripherals in order to ask you if you want to switch to "desktop mode".
Also if it detects a hybrid device like the transformer Prime would also give
you that option.
And those mini ARM android PCs are also another "developing and untapped"
market:http://liliputing.com/2013/04/tronsmart-mk908-quad-core-android-tv-stick-performance-video.html
But some people are doing some work and optimizations on
that:http://liliputing.com/2013/05/picuntu-homeio-for-rk3066-tv-sticks-makes-installing-linux-easyish.html
The CaseTop kickstarter you mention is a nice project (maybe a bit rough on the
edges for "mass" marketing) but shows that people want more from their phones
(much more than the limited experience of the atrix) and this is where ubuntu
can innovate and improve upon.

Omar B.

Subject: [Ubuntu-phone] Desktop mode, convergence and laptop docks

Hello all,

I am quite curious about the current state of "Desktop Mode" praised by Ubuntu
Touch announcements when it was show to the world.

I searched about it on the Wiki and could not find any technical documents.

The thing that I am most curious now is how it is supposed to work when
'docked', and what 'docked' would mean in this case. Plugging in an USB
keyboard? An HDMI monitor/TV?

Will it work with hardware such as the Atrix Lapdock (which I happen to own to
use with my Ubuntu ARM devices), the padfone tablet dock, or the kickstarter
project casetop?

How is it supposed to work with devices that do not have an HDMI-out plug like
the officially-supported Nexus devices? Will it implement something like a
virtual device on wifi via DLNA?

What are the use cases for which this functionality is being planned?

Best regards,
