For me Ubuntu has always been more then a brand, it's a philosophy of respect. We all know that currently there is nearly no IT product out there produced under fair conditions. This will not change over night but there is now a possibility arising in ~2013 to get a fair trade phone and the producers of that phone are toying with the idea to support Ubuntu Mobile: "Another option we are currently looking into is to launch the phone with Android, but fully prepare the FairPhone for Ubuntu."
Building a different mobile OS is one thing but being really different is another thing. FairPhone could be a nice gesture, an Ubuntu gesture - even if there would be only a small amount of fair trade phones with Ubuntu Mobile on it - better than the status quo and no other competitor has currently a phone that was produced under fair trade condition. http://www.fairphone.com/faq/ The Verge: "It’s an idea that’s been floating around for a while, a phone designed to have minimal impact on humans and the environment — and under FairPhone<http://fairphone.com>, a Dutch initiative for responsible tech, it’s quickly taking form. It’s a reminder that beneath the sleek shells of metal and plastic many will discover in their holiday stockings this year is a far less cheerful story. One increasingly familiar part of that story is the unethical treatment of factory workers<http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/27/3418258/beyond-foxconn-new-devices-and-old-abuses-shape-chinas-changing-labor>, an issue which seems to arise again<http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/16/3510628/foxconn-underage-interns-yantai-factory>and again<http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/25/3115224/report-on-vtech-sweatshop-implicates-at-t-motorola-and-others-in>within even the most progressive sections of China's colossal manufacturing sector..." http://www.theverge.com/2012/12/20/3784304/fairphone-chases-the-dream-of-ethical-smartphones-in-2013 Video - Nous Sommes FairPhone: http://vimeo.com/27764234 Greetings Thibaut
