When I attempted to boot from CD for install, the install process hung. I
repeated the boot while watching the console messages. The install stops
after a message that says "Stopping kernel save messages [OK]". How can I
proceed past this point?

I ran into this yesterday, upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04. When you get
something in the terminal display which needs action, hit the <tab> key.
That will change the focus so that you can <enter> the ok, or key in
whatever's appropriate.
This really should be fixed or documented somewhere.
