Well, after a decade dealing with different communities regarding OSS projects, I would say, that 75% of all contributing people in our business are "fire and forget" only 15% of all people contributing to FOSS are staying and doing more work. I could be wrong, but that's my view of the situation, and actually it was matching the situation since it became a "hype" to push packages into Ubuntu, because it was much faster then pushing them into Debian. Why? Because when I propose a patch to an upstream project, this patch is not going through directly...the patch is being discussed...(actually it's a review of the contents of the patch). This discussion is, for many people, a burden, because other people are judging your knowledge, your experience, your code. the judges are people with even more knowledge or less, depends on the project. After all that, many people will go, because their patch was not pushed into this project, because of some very serious reasons and objections from long standing contributors. Those contributors are not coming back... TBH, this behaviour is quiet known in every community which has nothing to do with IT or software or whatever technical stuff is out there. But actually that's my opinion...I saw it while REVU was evolving..and I stand to my point, that most people are going away, after the goal is reached, to get their package in our archives...after that the MOTU team has the responsibility to take care about that package... We need a barrier, to not let all software into Ubuntu, which will only live for a couple of months.
