Bob,
Sounds like you've got some good stuff on the way. I have a few
questions, though.
(1) The OpenedHand home page looks pretty interesting, but why are
you sticking with the scrolling row? I see the little overview row on
the bottom, but why not just have a full grid where all the icons are
equally touchable? Seems like it takes a lot of taps to open an app
with this UI.
(2) Since the OpenedHand home page uses Clutter/OpenGL, will it work
without HW-accelerated 3D? I know Poulsbo is going to have HW 3D, but
will the OpenedHand home be useable before the 3D driver is available?
(3) The marquee simplifications sound reasonable, but since you've
got the scalpel in your hand, why not trim away a bit of the clock
and the overall height and just make it a Mac OS X-style menu+status
bar? In other words, why hide the menu bar and why make it vertical
when you've now got the screen real estate to just make them
horizontal like other OSes?
(4) We've also got requests from one of our customers to make the
whole marquee hidden and shown via a HW button press (like Palm OS).
Given the 480-line displays some ODMs are planning to use, how about
building in hiding and showing? If you really want to sex it up,
take a look at the Sony PSP (or PS3), especially the Web browser.
They hide and show the menu bar (and lower status line), and when
they show them they make them translucent over the app, rather than
resizing the app to show them. They also have some sweet animation
when they hide and show.
(5) Are the scrolling lists custom GTK widgets? Will they have iPhone-
style kinetic scrolling? Will they be usable in a XUL app like Mobile
Browser?

- Thumbnail views: We have a first-pass at resizable thumbnail
view for photos. We need to enhance this to be more elegant.
- Wireframes: There are many missing features that we intend to
incorporate which include: internet radio, simple content
organization (subfolders), playlists, and slideshow. This requires
additional functionality on the left side of the main splitter for
each of Music, Photo, and Movie category. We are finishing up

UI

- We received an initial drop of a clutter-based UI from
OpenedHand. We intend to integrate this in as an option for the
home screen this week. It is still rough, but has finger
navigation and fun OpenGL magnification effects. (prototype pic
attached -- real one looks very similar, I just don't have a
screenshot on hand). We will make another anouncement when this is
official.
- We started on a DHTML alternative to both the OpenGL/OpenedHand
UI and the Flash UI for systems that are limited. It will be
runnable on any device as a fallback and also show how others can
easily create HTML home pages of their own. All 3 of these will be
available for others to build upon. (In the near future I also
hope to have a gtk-based alternative).
- We have not yet gone over all the issues related to application
startup as assigned. Pepper has been good in proposing ideas, most
of which we like and we just need to spend the time to flush out
the problems.
- Marquee: We are simplifying the marquee: No more top-left drop-
down application menu. The "Home Button" will just jump you back
to the home screen where all application startup will take place.
The left/right arrows to navigate between application swill go away
this week. They are confusing and don't work that well. We will
make the controls on the marquee have better UI (different graphics
for button pressed, for example). We will also add a down arrow to
the drop-down menu (similar to N800 UI).
- Application singleton: Applications should work as singletons
now if they follow the 3-step process: correct .desktop file,
service file, call osso_initialize() in their startup.
- Scrolling lists: We have been working with some code from the
Moko project that has finger scrollable lists. This will benefit
all applications which have lists.
