I was once given a great definition of marketing that has stayed with me for a long time and I have yet to find a better alternative: "The sole purpose of marketing is to shorten the sales cycle." Anything anyone does under the umbrella of "marketing" should consider if the activity meets this criteria... It still applies to [F]OSS just as well as in the commercial sector. Think about it.
