Hello folks! Happy Holidays (whatever you happen to celebrate or not) to all, first and foremost! :-)
I am writing this e-mail because while leafing through issue 26 of UWN ( http://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuWeeklyNewsletter/Issue26 ), I noticed a project called Ubuntu Christmas Edition. But that's not what I'm writing about. I'm writing about the software that was used to create this festive flavour of Ubuntu in the first place. That software is called Reconstructor, and it allows one to create a custom Ubuntu LiveCD (not just customize the default package set, but also the many visual aspects as well). This may seem like a silly toy to some of you, but to me it has great potential for marketing Ubuntu to enterprise customers and OEMs. Here's what I'd like to see: 1. OEM/Enterprise IT folks use Reconstructor to create custom, Ubuntu-based distribution tailored to their company, with the option to include whatever commercial software they have licensed (e.g. include CrossOver Office with Adobe Photoshop, for example). 2. Reconstructor should also be able to set up a repository server for (optionally mirroring the official Ubuntu repositories for internal use) as well as providing clients with updates to whatever custom packages were created by Reconstructor. 3. Provide a community-edited repository of clipart and media for use with Reconstructor. The media should be indexed, searchable and browseable. Having worked in a medium-sized IT shop, I can tell you right off the bat that if there were an "out of the box" (not bits and pieces all over the net put together) solution like this, we would eliminate a rather large stepping stone in the staircase of Ubuntu enterprise adoption.
