Why is Melissa's Ubuntu Counter Important?

A fair question ....

There are two things I see of importance.

1) People are actually are doing it. If folks are willing to be counted
then perhaps they will actually register and provide some valuable
marketing feedback.

How valuable?

For example if folks said the most annoying thing about Ubuntu Linux
Gnome is the start-up sound why wouldn't we change it? If the majority
of people said I really can't get with the current color scheme, why
wouldn't we change it.

In the commercial world companies beg for this type of information.

Do you think Apple has any interest in this marketing data?

What about Dell?

2) The second piece of the info available now is the count. According to
the count if our marketing efforts are not targeted toward Ubuntu Linux
Gnome, then we are missing the boat. I realize this may be a small
sample of the total Ubuntu population but what else do we have?

I am not saying Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, and Ubuntu Server are not
good products but relative to Ubuntu Linux Gnome, the users are not
there.

Ok, how does this play out?

Relative to the Ubuntu Magazine, if a lot of the desktop focus isn't on
Gnome then the readership may not be there. If people do not read the
magazine, it will cease to exist.

Relative to Ubuntu, if Ubuntu Linux isn't the best Linux available
people will go someplace else.

If I am all wet on this one please show me the alternative.

Thanks,

John
