You're partially correct. Initially, the \application tag did two things: Set the application name bold-faced type, and added an index entry. When reading through the manual, though, having everything in bold (button names, application names, tabs, drop-down lists, checkboxes, radio buttons, text field names, menu names, etc.) was a bit too much. It made it difficult to read. To help alleviate this a bit, I turned off the bold-faced type for the application names.
