When I first setup Ubuntu many years ago I was using an adsl modem. I found it almost impossible to get working. However there was a download available from a link somewhere in a forum for a combined driver and connection program for Thomson Speedtouch modems. Almost all UK adsl modems are of this type.
I can't remember any more specifics I'm afraid. I know that this program had to extract the firmware drivers from the modem and manipulate them somehow. Setting up an adsl modem under ubuntu is a complete nightmare.
