the exact same thing happened to me. even my friend is also complaining
about ubuntu.
really felt bad.

when we installed ubuntu every thing was working fine until my friend boot
into wincedows. when rebooted from wincedows the exact same error occurs.
the same problem is occurring with the new inspiron laptops with atheros
ethernet controller.

so i then partitioned the hard disk from within windows and installed ubuntu
9.04 which solves that problem.the grub appears and can boot into both
ubuntu and wincedows.
but this causes another new problem.
the lan and wireless doesnot work in 9.04. the lan is not recognized even in
the live cd.
so with out lan, it not possible to update also.

but i've no idea why the error occurs when i install 10.04.
