For those of you who haven't heard, the first developer preview of
Diaspora has been released. It's social networking software that
allows you to be in control of your own data (cf: Facebook/Orkut). The
concept is of "seeds" or individual deployments of this software that
can talk to each other, so say a diaspora user in India can connect
with someone in the USA irrespective of what "seed" they're connected

In the code provided there is a Ubuntu installation script. However
this didn't work for me (no idea why, it breaks at line 30). I wrote a
simpler version of it which should do the trick. For Lucid, this
should work out of the box. For other releases you need to change the
RELEASE variable at the top to 9.10 for Karmic, 9.4 for Jaunty etc.
