Though I have not tried any HDD yet, my wild guess is that the system would not have recognised the external device. And honestly, I never bothered to see if there were any options apart from ext2 (I don't have a spare system to boot in and check right now) Here [0] is the howto on creating LiveUSB and it mentions only ext2 or fat32, so you have the answer.
