I am not sure whether u can upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04 directly . Anyway all I can say is that YOU CANT UPGRADE YOUR UBUNTU WITH A LIVE CD . You should download the ALTERNATE CD iso image from the site and mount it . The package manager automatically asks if you want to upgrade the distro , once the mount is done .
