Alternate install CD is the installation CD which cannot operate as a live CD. The regular CD has dual function, it can operate both as a live CD and also as an installation CD. The regular CD requires more RAM than the alternate CD. If you are unable to get the alternate CD, than try installing from the regular CD after increasing your RAM.
