Thanks Onkar,Roshan and Zubin for your help and suggestion. I found out what
was wrong. It was System Network Proxy which was
wrong.System>Preferences>Network Proxy was set to manual 128.0.0.1, i then set
it to "direct connection to internet" and the Synaptic started working all
right. I must have fiddled with it at some point.
