Just checked out efax and found the following:

http://www.efax.com/en/efax/twa/productOverview

1. Its a fax service - and does not convert the computer into a
standalone fax machine. The faxes are sent and received as email attachments

2. To send and received its a payable service $16- 20. The free service
is limited to 20 incoming pages a month and no outgoing.

3. They do give you a unique number for the duration you register with them

4. For those interested India too has a service

AND

However next would like to know if there is any software that allows one
to *use the modem as a fax machine*

something like faxmail for windows (shareware)
