Earlier this week, Firefox 52 was pushed as a security and feature update to all supported Ubuntu releases.
GNOME Shell includes a NPAPI plugin which enables users to manage their GNOME Shell extensions at https://extensions.gnome.org/ . But Firefox 52 drops support for NPAPI plugins. https://extensions.gnome.org also supports a 2-part solution: the chrome-gnome-shell package and a related browser addon. This solution works with Firefox, Google Chrome, Chromium and Opera. In the next few days, a ubuntu-gnome-desktop update will be pushed to Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 LTS, 16.04 LTS and 16.10 to automatically install chrome-gnome-shell. The next time you visit https:/extensions.gnome.org/ you will be prompted to install the required browser addon.
