Nouveau won't have any GTX900 support until 16.10
Plymouth graphic screen is disabled when running nvidia blobs since it can cause issues with the framebuffer, once nvidia switches to KMS drivers soon, it can probably be re-enabled. If you have the graphics mode re-enabled on your system, you should revert back to text mode. As for your upgrade just swap the cards out, it should just work.
