I see now that it's true in Xenial that some Ubuntu MATE meta packages
depend on fonts-nanum (and several other font packages).

The issue was fixed in 16.10.
I sent a copy of this message to Martin Wimpress so he can consider if
it should be changed in Xenial as an SRU.
