I suspect that there's a clash of interests. Isn't UNITY based a lot on GNOME? Among users of the GNOME mailer Evolution Ubuntu is known to continuously cause serious issues. Perhaps the GNOME package maintainers could explain the Ubuntu policy regarding GNOME packages. A lot of packages are synced with Debian, so perhaps GNOME packages needed by UNITY are not synced with Debian, but chosen to fit best to UNITY. That's just a shot in the dark.
